Baillie Gifford Alternative Internship

Curious about the world?

  • Win a unique opportunity to discover, explore, and imagine the future.

We’re looking for people who are curious about the world around them. People who combine intellect, insights and a fresh perspective. If that sounds like you, then you could win £5,000 to deliver a research project next summer. All you have to do is complete our quiz and answer the following question, in no more than 300 words:

The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, once said that “change is the only constant in life”. It is happening all around us: industries, societies, environments – the list goes on. Pick an area where you see rapid change and tell us why you’re optimistic about the future.

If chosen, you will complete four weeks of research during June and July 2021. This will be followed by two weeks in our Edinburgh head office at the beginning of August (either virtually or with paid accommodation in the city), where you’ll write up and present your findings, as well as learn more about our approach to investment management.

Address an area that’s specific enough to draw firm conclusions. Be original, creative and thought provoking. This is going to be an intellectually rigorous and challenging project. We are expecting high-level research and convincing, well-structured arguments that will challenge the way we think.

Show us your problem solving approach to technical challenges too. We’re looking for well-rounded individuals who have a positive approach  – and as your project will be a web-based application, you will need to know your way around web technologies

Baillie Gifford Technical Infrastructure

About us

Cutting edge technology at the heart of our business.

Baillie Gifford was established as an investment management partnership over 100 years ago.  Today, we are an independent global investment management business with over £200 billion under management and a team of over 1,200 people based in Edinburgh.

In this fast moving and ever changing business landscape, cutting-edge information systems underpin everything we do. So as you’d expect, we’re constantly investing in the development of our technical infrastructure. Just as important though, we invest a lot in the development of our people: the 300-strong team of technology professionals in Edinburgh who bring that technology to life.

The role

Explore new possibilities.

This is a genuinely collaborative, innovative and co-operative environment, within which you’ll get the chance to work across the full range of technologies – from desktop to mobile. You’ll see how we’re harnessing the potential of Agile Development approaches to pioneer breakthrough solutions.

Our team doesn’t just work with the latest technology – they work on it. We frequently collaborate with major suppliers like Cisco and Microsoft and field trial their new technologies. So you’ll not only work with new software and kit before anyone else, but also help to shape its functionality.

Structured training. Real responsibility.

Our training programme lasts for two years and provides opportunities to rotate around a number of areas. After a comprehensive three-month induction, you’ll move on to the IT Service Desk, and then gain experience across our Data Centre & Operations and Integration & Optimisation teams.  Don’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end though. There’s full and ongoing support from the smart, motivated and talented people around you.

Our Technical Infrastructure team maintains and develops the entire IT operation including our own private cloud and Data Centre, Oracle and SQL estates, supporting several thousand desktops, laptops and mobile devices. In terms of vendors, you’ll get the chance to work with products from companies like Dell EMC, Oracle,  Palo Alto, Splunk and Bloomberg. We also work with cloud technologies including Office 365, Microsoft Azure and AWS.

What you’ll need to succeed

Step forward.

We’re looking for a strong aptitude for IT, as well as a focus on developing your technical and personal skills. At Baillie Gifford, your career development is very much in your own hands.  So you’ll take ownership of it and drive it forward yourself. In return, we’ll give you all the training and support you need to achieve your goals.

You don’t need to have studied an IT-related degree, but you will need an interest in and commitment to developing your technical knowledge. Just as important though, you must bring strong communication skills, real commercial awareness and the ability to explain to us how you believe technology can make business better.

Salary

A competitive salary + benefits package including £3,000 sign-on bonus, 15% employer contributory pension, discretionary annual bonus and 34 days’ holiday.

Baillie Gifford Investment Research

About us

Your future. Re-imagined.

When imagining a role in the investment industry, you may picture a traditional financial position filled with
mathematical analysis and number-crunching. But instead, let’s imagine something different. Imagine a role where your creativity is held in higher esteem than your numeracy skills. A position where your curiosity is currency and where your potential is key.

At Baillie Gifford our work is a million miles from that stereotype of investors who constantly track markets looking for short-term gains. Instead, our focus is on developing a deep understanding of the underlying drivers behind potential investments. That means questioning everything that happens around us, and anticipating the consequences of local, regional and global events. In other words, we try to foresee what the future holds.

The role

A research career.

On our Investment Research programme, around 80% of your time will be spent researching ideas, trends, companies and industries. So at Baillie Gifford, we’re less interested in what you know, than your enthusiasm to know more. For us, inspiration can come from anywhere. You’ll have to cast your net far and wide to collect information and create your own unique viewpoint. This will enable you to spot investment opportunities that others may have missed. In other words, you might be every bit as likely to find inspiration from an internet blog as you are from an industry conference.

Taking on real responsibility in your first few months, you’ll be expected to write regular reports on your research findings. This should be familiar process for you from your experience of academic writing. You’ll then present your reports during one of your team’s regular discussions. These are where you’ll also be expected to discuss and give your opinions on other investment ideas. Your team members will vary from graduates who were in your shoes last year all the way up to partners in the firm. Every opinion is valued, as we believe any viewpoint could unearth huge opportunities.

There are two distinct career paths for Investment Research Trainees at Baillie Gifford. Graduates on our Equities programme will rotate through a series of teams researching companies that have the potential to grow significantly over the next decade. Trainees joining our Multi-Asset and Fixed Income (MAFI) programme will learn about a range of investments including equities, bonds and property. You can choose which programme you wish to apply to or, if you prefer to leave this open, we can select the one which best suits your potential.

When you join, you will be part of a culture that cares about you as an individual. You’ll work closely with senior employees and receive guidance from a programme manager, a year group mentor and a mentor within each placement; all to ensure you reach your full potential.

What you’ll need to succeed

Intellectual challenge.

At Baillie Gifford, we like to see things differently. For us, it’s not about looking for graduates from a particular degree. Instead, we look for particular graduates – people who are inquisitive thinkers who have the vision to see what the future could look like. That’s why we’re just as likely to hire a musician, a doctor and a politics graduate, as we are a mathematician.

As with our investments, we’re good at spotting potential. Our graduates are given responsibility from day one, with the right support and training to ensure they flourish. So, consider your own potential. Do you ask questions, solve problems and think differently? Then we imagine you’d be a good fit for Baillie Gifford.

Business Operations Summer Placements

The business

Baillie Gifford was established as an investment management partnership over 100 years ago. Today, with over 1,200 people based in Edinburgh, and more than 700 clients across the globe, we’re an independent investment management business with over £200 billion under management.

We do much more than just buy shares in companies. We think about a company’s potential to grow significantly in the next five to ten years, which is often influenced by many diverse and conflicting factors. Our work is a million miles from the stereotype of investors who track markets looking for short-term gains. Instead, we focus on developing a deep understanding of the underlying drivers behind potential investments. That means questioning everything that happens around us, and anticipating the consequences of local and global events.

The opportunity

Our Operations teams are often described as the ‘oil in the machine’ and are vital for the smooth running of our entire firm. These teams are responsible for everything from liaising with clients, to reconciling trades and analysing operational risk. This is why we’re offering a wide range of summer placement opportunities, which will help you learn about a particular area of our business, whilst gaining a wider knowledge of the investment management industry.

Whichever area you’re interested in, you’ll benefit from a detailed induction and an individual learning and development plan. This includes both structured training sessions and on-the-job mentoring throughout your time with the firm.  Students are also given a Learning Journal to record their experiences and accomplishments, which will help you with applications for future roles.

The placements are as different as the departments are diverse, however each one offers the opportunity to add value to the business and gain a deep understanding of the function.  Each role requires commitment, enthusiasm and the desire to explore the wider opportunities here at Baillie Gifford. This is your opportunity to prove to yourself – and us – what you’re capable of.

Placements last between 8 and 12 weeks, starting on the 16th June 2021. This year we have opportunities available in the following areas:

  • Document Management
  • Client Administration
  • Finance Systems
  • Financial Control & Reporting
  • Group Governance Services
  • HR
  • Legal
  • Performance Analysis.

Requirements

We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic, ambitious and keen to learn about a global investment management business. People who see opportunities where others see challenges. People who turn stumbling blocks into stepping-stones. First-rate communication and organisation skills are also essential, and we’d like to see evidence of this in your application.

For most of the placements, you can be in any year, studying any degree or even have recently graduated. For the Legal placement you will need to be studying for a law degree.

Salary

In addition to the rewarding experience and invaluable skills and knowledge you’ll gain, there is a salary of £18,000 pro rata.
