Victoria Beckham shares emotional exchange with gay Spice Girls fans: ‘It means so much’

Posh Spice Victoria Beckham has reflected on how the Spice Girls helped young queer people with their brand of Girl Power.
In an interview with Condé Nast, Beckham was asked what it meant to her to have such a devoted LGBTQ+ following
“Quite often, young boys come up to me on the street and say, ‘You made it OK for me to come out and not hide anymore, and really celebrate and be who I was scared to be,” Beckham said. “That means so much.”
Continuing, the fashion mogul said that while the Spice Girls epitomised ‘girl power’, she knows that they gave boys (read, queer boys) a chance to feel that power too.
“I think that the Spice Girls did empower both girls and boys all around the world [to] accept who they are, accept that they were a little bit different,” she said.

She said the Spice Girls were ‘underdogs’, saying this gave them an affinity with the LGBTQ+ community.
“We were all different. Individually, none of us were really that great. But collectively we worked and people could relate to one of us. We were all underdogs in our own little ways. And together we worked and we celebrated that.”
The Spice Girls are a queer fan-favourite, with members regularly showing support for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as religiously tweeting about Pride and appearing on seasons of Drag Race.

But Victoria Beckham’s husband, ex-footballer David Beckham, has recently come under fire for his multi-million pound job promoting Qatar – a country where gay people can be executed.
More recently, he has been accused of blocking a gay Qatari man who begged him to stand up for LGBTQ+ rights on Twitter.
Dr Nas Mohamed, one of Qatar’s only openly gay public figures, says he was “shocked” by the footballer’s initial response, but says he was then unblocked after the online incident was reported in the press.
