Demi Lovato explains why she’s using she/her pronouns again as well as they/them

Demi Lovato is seen at "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on July 14, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato says using she/her as well as they/them pronouns is a reflection of her ever-evolving gender fluidity.

The 29-year-old began using they/them exclusively after coming out as non-binary in 2021, but has recently begun using she/her pronouns as well.

Explaining the change, Demi Lovato told the Spout Podcast on Monday (1 August): “I’m such a fluid person when it comes to my gender, my sexuality, my music, my creativity.”

Last year [when she began using they/them pronouns], my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy.”

“When I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said, women and men, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman.

“Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted she/her again. But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect.”

They’ve since updated their pronouns on Instagram to they/them/she/her.

Demi Lovato has long been open about their gender journey.

She explained even she misgenders herself from time to time during a coming-out episode of her podcast in 2021.

Lovato said she has a willingness to accept those who struggle with pronouns as long as they are “making the effort”, and that it’s “important because I want to use these pronouns” without making people “so afraid of messing up that they don’t try to use them”.

They also came out as pansexual in March of the same year in an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience.

During the segment, she opened up about her fluidity for the first time, saying that she’s attracted to “anything, really.”

Demi Lovato’s upcoming eighth studio album Holy Fvck will be released on 19 August, supported by a tour which begins on 13 August and ends on 5 October.

In a statement announcing the album, Lovato said: “The process of making this album has been the most fulfilling yet, and I’m grateful to my fans and collaborators for being on this journey with me.”
