Celebrity Drag Race gets huge revamp and it’s basically the Masked Singer with drag now

After a two year wait, RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race is coming back bigger than ever.

Most notably, the new season has moved on from the original werk room format, and instead is giving us the love child of Drag Race, The Masked Singer and, somehow, Lip Sync Battle. Yes, that’s right.

In the new RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, nine celebrities will undergo incognito drag transformations as viewers scramble to figure out their secret identities.

Each week, the celebrities will compete against one another in theatric lip-sync and dance performances in front of a live studio audience, with their identities only revealed after they are eliminated.

The season will lead up to a grand finale where one of the contestants is crowned “America’s Next Celeb Drag Superstar”, and awarded $100,000 for their favourite charity.

Resident judges RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Matthews will be returning alongside as host of special guests.

Three iconic “Queen Supremes”, Brooke Lynn HytesJujubee, and Monét X Change, will be mentoring contestants.

They will be joined by Drag Race legends making special appearances throughout the season, including Eureka, Gottmik, Katya, Morgan McMichaels, Silky Nutmeg Ganache and Violet Chachki.

Taking to Twitter, Brooke Lynn Hytes said: “Also y’all the STAGE and production @RuPaulsDragRace & VH1 put into this is unmatched!!! Prepare to GAG!”

After the trailer dropped, fans are still trying to process the new Masked Singer-style format, and have already brought their confusion, conspiracy theories and scepticism to the table.

So it’s time to get your investigative caps on and indulge in the extravaganza of it all.

The format isn’t the only change – season two is double the length with eight episodes, with the first four a whopping 90 minutes each and the final four clocking in at 60 minutes.

RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race kicks off on 12 August on VH1 for US viewers and 13 August on WOW Presents Plus for UK viewers.
