Lil Nas X has dropped a new song and video, “Late to Da Party”, and he’s not at all happy with BET.

The video for the new Lil Nas X song, a collab with NBA YoungBoy opens with the refrain “F**k BET” over a time-lapse of the artist creating the song’s cover art – of him urinating on a BET Award in the toilet.

It then sees Lil Nas and NBA YoungBoy crashing into a rendered stadium with “BET Awards” drawn on it as Lil Nas repeats the phrase, “F**k BET”.

The video is classic Lil Nas X, filled with memes and intentionally bad green-screen editing, and fans are here for it

One fan commented sarcastically that “we need to appreciate the billions of dollars put into editing this masterpiece of a music video”, while another said,: “the editing was CRAZY on this one, it looks so real.”

Others have noted the collaboration being one they “never thought was possible but they killed it”.

Meanwhile, Twitter users have been loving the new track, with one tweeting: “This is the correct way to listen to ‘Late to Da Party’,” showing off a giant novelty Apple Airpod.

One commented on how Lil Nas and Youngboy “flow together surprisingly well,” while another said jokingly that it has “the most expensive video in the decade”.

Lil Nas X has been open about his disappointment with the BET Awards after it snubbed him yet again, despite his world-conquering successes.

In a since-deleted tweet after the nominations were announced on 1 June, the artist – best known for his song “Old Town Road” – expressed his frustration, saying: “Thank you BET awards. An outstanding zero nominations again. Black excellence!”

He referenced his win at the Grammys in a later tweet, saying: “How can I get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just [one] nomination from my own people? Is that not crazy? Am I really tripping?”

BET later responded to Lil Nas X’s criticism in a statement reported by Variety, saying that they “use all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community”.

The organisation then mentioned that he was “nominated for a best new artist BET Award in 2020″. They shifted blame for his snub in this year’s nominations, explaining: “Unfortunately, this year, he was not nominated by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of an esteemed group of nearly 500 entertainment professionals in the fields of music, television, film, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, influencers and creative arts.

“No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy.”

Though he won’t be attending this year on Sunday (26 June), Lil Nas X has previously performed at the BET Awards in 2021, wowing queer fans with an on-stage kiss.
