And Just Like That creator promises much, much more of divisive Che Diaz in season two

Queer TV fans can rejoice – or not, as the case may be. And Just Like That… showrunner Michael Patrick King has confirmed that season two will “show more” of non-binary character Che Diaz.

Starring Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon, HBO Max’s reboot of Sex and the City was renewed for a second series in March 2022, with fans hoping that the upcoming season will tie up some of the loose ends of season one.

Despite not being part of the original Sex and the City cast, Sara Ramírez’s unforgettable portrayal of non-binary podcaster and stand-up comedian Che Diaz made the character a hot topic of discussion among fans.

As And Just Like That… explores Miranda Hobbes’ sexual awakening, Che caused a stir when they fell in love with Miranda and brought and end to her marriage with Steve.

While many fans were delighted to see more LGBTQ+ representation on the show, some found that Che and Miranda’s relationship didn’t have enough depth. However, it seems that series two could be Che’s chance to shine.

Speaking to Variety, And Just Like That… creator King described Che as one of his “burning passions” in the upcoming season.

“I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason – because they were blinded, out of fear or terror. I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.”

King acknowledged that Che was a “polarising character”, receiving mixed opinions from viewers for their often cringe-worthy stand-up and brazen personality.

However, Ramírez, who is also non-binary, said that Che’s “complicated and messy” side is one of their favourite things about the character.

“Che is a great reminder that even when we don’t like someone in our community, they still deserve love, safety and joy, like everyone else” they added.

Ramírez also noted that the “conflict” Che has brought to the show is “what keeps the story moving”.

King praised Ramírez for their role on And Just Like That…, saying it was “crucial” for him that Ramírez played Che Diaz.

Although HBO has not confirmed a release date for And Just Like That… season two, one thing is for sure: Che is going to be making themselves seen.
