The first trailer for The Umbrella Academy season three is teasing tons of actions, sibling rivalry and the future of Elliot Page’s character.

Netflix dropped the first trailer for season three of the superhero series on Thursday (19 May), gearing fans up for the release of the highly-anticipated series on 22 June. The second season of the fan-favourite show debuted in 2020, months before Page would come out publicly as trans in December that year.

The Umbrella Academy season two concluded with the team – composed of characters played by Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher – returning to 2019 after putting a stop to an apocalypse in 1963.

But they quickly realise that they’ve entered into a different reality in which a new team, called the Sparrows, are in charge. Oh also, their dead brother Ben (Justin H Min) is alive, has no idea who they are and is actually part of the Sparrows.

In March, Page shared an exciting update with fans that their character will be known as Viktor Hargreeves, and Netflix confirmed that Viktor would come out as trans in the upcoming season.

The first trailer has teased that the new season will follow Viktor’s journey with their gender identity as there are clips featuring a pretransition Number Seven from The Umbrella Academy season two.

The trailer opens with Viktor presenting in a similar way to the end of season two as the Sparrow Academy members are revealed. A later scene depicts Victor with shorter hair and wearing a polo shirt and reveals that travelling back to the future created a time paradox, which is now “swallowing” parts of reality.

Five believes this has brought forth a “kugelblitz” when Viktor asks the obvious question: “What the hell is a kugelblitz?”

“Essentially, we’re screwed,” the time hopper admits. He later reveals that the siblings have just a couple days before “existence is blitzed”.

In one scene, Viktor, who has slightly longer hair, confronts a member of the Sparrows and references how their earlier actions brought about the apocalypse twice.

“Your team’s good, but I don’t think you’re better than me,” Victor says. “I ended the world twice. And you? You’re just meat and spandex.”

But, there’s also a possibility that Viktor could be a completely different person than fans saw in the previous season. Five tells his siblings that Reginald Hargreeves didn’t adopt them in this reality, but “those babies still existed here”.

So he warns the siblings to “avoid” their other self in this new reality.

Follow us on this one, it’s possible that another version of Page’s character – who didn’t grow up under Reginald’s horrific ‘parenting’, didn’t have contact with The Umbrella Academy members and wasn’t under Allison’s mind control – could have grown up much differently.

Maybe that person grew up with a completely different background and developed a better understanding of their gender identity, transitioning earlier in their life.

So the different appearances of Viktor in the trailer could actually be two different characters entirely – which would be unsurprising given that The Umbrella Academy is known for its odd twists and turns.

Honestly, who knows what will happen in The Umbrella Academy season three as nothing – including the timeline – is ever set in stone.

The Umbrella Academy season three premieres on Netflix on 22 June.
