Hilary Duff has teased a potential LGBTQ+ romance for her character in the next season of sitcom How I Met Your Father.

The series, a spin-off of How I Met Your Mother, sees Duff’s character Sophie attempt to meet “the one” in New York along with her friendship group; an older version of her character is played by the legendary Kim Cattrall.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Duff spoke about a potential romance with Chris Lowell’s character Jesse, but explained that she wanted to keep the storyline open in terms of who the mystery father is.

She said: “I think that anyone can be The One… I think that there’s always some sort of an opportunity or, like, a need to leave a door open without seeming like you’re overstepping boundaries.

“I think the writers are just going to have to continue to lead Sophie in the right directions there.”

She added that Sophie could in fact be paired up with Jesse’s adoptive sister Ellen, played by Tien Tran.

“I think her journey is, you know, the opportunity’s open with a lot of the cast… Ellen is the Father,” she joked.

Tran, who is a lesbian in real life and plays a queer character, said in the interview that it is “refreshing” to see LGBTQ+ storylines that aren’t rooted in trauma or a difficult “coming out” journey.

“It’s very exciting as a queer person in real life to get to play someone who’s queer, who’s part of the friend group, who doesn’t have to come out or have any storylines that are based on her trauma… it’s so refreshing, so cool, and what life is like,” she said.

Describing her character as a “baby gay”, she added: “It’s such a wonderful story to tell that she’s in New York City with her friends and going through the same trials and tribulations as the rest of her friend group.”

“I love that she is part of a growing list of queer characters across TV and film.”

How I Met Your Father is available on Disney+ in the UK.
