The first trailer for Billy Eichner’s rom-com Bros – that will be played entirely by LGBTQ+ actors (yes, even the straight characters) – has officially dropped.

The film, which will also make history as the first gay rom-com from a major Hollywood studio, will star Luke McFarlane as Eichner’s love interest.

The story follows two gay men who are “maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Also starring in Bros will be RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone, trans actor TS Madison, gender non-conforming star Miss Lawrence, Scandal actor Guillermo Diaz and Billy on the Street writer Guy Branum.

The trailer showed the process of writing a queer rom-com, stating that in fact gay relationships and straight relationships are not the same, and that “love is love” is “bulls**t”, adding that “our friendships”, “our sex lives”, and “our relationships” are all different.

The trailer ends on an extremely queer note: “Do you guys remember straight people? Yeah, they had a nice run”.

Billy Eichner gave PinkNews and other LGBTQ+ outlets the first look at the Bros trailer because he believes it is “crucial” that the needs of queer people were “prioritised”.

“From the very beginning of developing Bros, I let everyone know that, while I wanted to make a movie that was hilarious and relatable to everyone, first and foremost I wanted to make a movie that felt authentic to LGBTQ+ folks that the movie is about – and who have been so profoundly underserved by Hollywood over the years, particularly the major movie studios,” he said.

“From the storytelling to the casting to the crew, it was crucial to me that the needs to LGBTQ+ people were being prioritised.

“As you know, Bros is historic in several ways. It’s the first gay-rom ever released by a major studio, it’s the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ+ cast in all the roles – even the straight roles – and apparently I’m the first openly gay man to ever write and star in his own major studio film, which is bizarre and infuriating but somehow true.

“But aside from all the historic statistics attached to it, what I wanted most of all was to make an authentic, hilarious and heartfelt film about what it’s like to be a single adult gay man attempting a relationship in 2022.”

Bros is set to be released in the UK on 28 October 2022.
