Rapper Kidd Creole jailed for 16 years for killing homeless man 'he thought was gay'

Rapper Kidd Creole has been sentenced to 16 years in jail after he killed a homeless man in Manhattan, New York, who he “thought was gay”.

Kidd Creole – real name Nathaniel Glover – was found guilty of manslaughter in April after he stabbed 55-year-old John Jolly in the chest on 1 August, 2017.

According to The Independent, Kidd Creole will now face five years of post-release supervision in addition to his 16-year jail sentence.

The 62-year-old rapper, who was the founding member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, reportedly stabbed Jolly because he believed that he was gay and hitting on him.

In a taped interview to police, Kidd Creole explained he felt “a little nervous” when Jolly approached him.

He said: “To tell the truth, I thought he was gay, and because I thought he was gay, and he was saying that to me, ‘What’s up?’, I was thinking that he was thinking I was gay.

“I tried to back up a little bit and he moved forward, and then I just took the knife and stabbed him… I wish I never would have seen him.

“It’s all my fault, because I chose to stab him. I have to take responsibility for that.”

Kidd Creole said after learning of his sentence: “I’m very disappointed in the way that that this whole situation played out… I’ve been portrayed as a callous and senseless [killer]… which is far from the person who I am.

“I’ve been slandered and all this made me seem as if I am a person who actually has no remorse and no repentance.”

Associated Press reported that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said after the sentencing: “Mr. Jolly’s death was devastating to his family and those who knew him.

“Every life we lose to violent crime ripples throughout our entire city, and we will continue to ensure everyone in our borough can live their lives with the sense of safety and security they deserve.”
