The best – and worst – Met Gala 2022 looks, from Blake Lively to Elon Musk

The world’s biggest stars brought the glitz and glamour we were so desperately craving to the 2022 Met Gala.

The theme was “Gilded Glamour”, with famous figures encouraged to channel the elegance of late 19th century fashion.

Some understood the assignment, but others seemed to miss the memo entirely – as is always the case.

We take a look at some of the best and worst dressed stars from the 2022 Met Gala, from Blake Lively’s show-stopping dress to Elon Musk’s refusal to make even the slightest effort.

Lizzo

It sometimes feels like Lizzo never puts a foot wrong, and she’s only reinforcing that idea with this powerful, opulent Met Gala outfit.

The Thom Browne ensemble packs a punch – it is the very definition of “gilded glamour”. From the coat to the choker, everything feels perfectly placed. Once again, Lizzo wins the day.

Bad Bunny

We admire Bad Bunny for putting in the effort, something many of his male counterparts didn’t bother to do – but his outfit is giving “Inspector Gadget” more than “Gilded Glamour”.

The rapper turned up to the event wearing a Burberry boiler suit designed by Riccardo Tisci. While we always love seeing men subverting fashion norms, this just isn’t it.

Blake Lively

The internet was abuzz when Blake Lively turned up to the Met Gala in her stunning Versace dress – and for good reason.

The star, who also co-chaired the event with her husband Ryan Reynolds, donned opera gloves and a tiara alongside a dress that appeared to change colour. According to Cosmopolitan, the look pays homage to the Statue of Liberty, but also to the ceiling of Grand Central Station and to the architecture of the Empire State Building.

It’s safe to say she understood the assignment.

Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes looked as dashing as ever at the Met Gala, but he didn’t exactly bring his A-game.

The singer’s outfit didn’t evoke any element of “gilded glamour”, nor did it evoke glamour at all – it doesn’t look too far removed from what he would wear on a regular basis. For that reason, we’re deeming this one a flop.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion reminded us that she can do no wrong with her stunning Met Gala outfit.

The rapper’s Moschino outfit is elegant and powerful. Most importantly, it captures the theme perfectly. Once again, it’s a big win for the iconic rapper.

Elon Musk

We can only assume Elon Musk was so busy with his Twitter takeover that he forgot to plan his outfit for the Met Gala.

When asked about his perfectly serviceable suit at the event, Musk reportedly said he was “just following the dress code” – but that’s about all he managed to do. The Met Gala is about drama as much as it’s about following the theme, and there was no drama whatsoever to be seen in his perfectly ordinary suit.

Emma Corrin

Emma Corrin’s Met Gala outfit might look a little left-field at first, but it turns out it’s carefully thought through.

The actor, who was catapulted to fame after playing Princess Diana on The Crown, wore a Miu Miu outfit replete with an oversized coat and a top hat.

According to Cosmopolitan, the look is a tribute to Evander Berry Wal, a New York socialite who is affectionately known as “King of the Dudes”.

Joe Jonas

We have to give Joe Jonas credit for trying – he gets an A for effort here, but the overall ensemble just doesn’t come together.

The singer’s Louis Vuitton look has an edge to it, but it also ends up looking cobbled together – the blazer clashes with the pants and the shoes feel out of place too.

Sophie Turner played it somewhat safe with her gothic dress – also by Louis Vuitton – and also revealed her pregnancy on the red carpet. In a post-Rihanna world, it didn’t exactly set our world on fire, but it was fine.

Michelle Yeoh

We can always count on Michelle Yeoh to bring glamour with her everywhere she goes, and she didn’t disappoint at the Met Gala.

The actress arrived in an Atelier Prabal Gurung emerald gown, and while it might not be the most dramatic outfit of the night, it certainly brings glamour to the table.
