All eyes will be focused on fashion’s elite when the Met Gala takes place on Monday (2 May), however designer Tom Ford isn’t expecting to be wowed by any of the outfits on the display.

The annual event is one of the biggest nights in the fashion calendar, with some of the most famous faces in the world descending on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for a lucrative fundraiser.

The Met Gala usually generates headlines for days, with fevered discussion of who was there and what they were wearing.

However, Tom Ford believes the level of fashion on display has dropped in quality, taking particular aim at stars like Katy Perry who have opted for gimmicky, eccentric outfits over the years.

Speaking to former New York Magazine editor Amy Odell in an excerpt of her forthcoming biography of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Ford stated: “It’s turned into a costume party. That used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century.”

Referencing Perry’s famous 2019 chandelier dress by Moschino, as well as the hamburger costume she quickly changed into for the afterparty, Ford continued: “You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”

Katy Perry certainly caused a stir when she arrived to the 2019 Met Gala in the eye-catching chandelier ensemble, complete with light bulbs and a dramatic headpiece.

The extravagant look was the singer and Moschino designer Jeremy Scott’s interpretation of the theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion”.

Despite his criticism, Tom Ford remains an honorary co-chair of this year’s gala, along with Wintour and Instagram’s Adam Mosseri.

Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda also serve as co-chairs this year.

The 2022 Met Gala will take place on Monday (2 May), and will follow the theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”.
