Elliot Page has signed on as an executive producer for a documentary about trans lives in Italy, which is set to premiere next month.

Page described the film as “a meditation on trans humanity”, and said he’d “never seen another film like it”.

The documentary is titled Nel Mio Nome, which translates to Into My Name, and comes from the creative mind of Italian director and producer Nicolò Bassetti.

It stems from Bassetti’s personal experience with his own son, who is trans, and follows a close-knight group of four friends – Nic, Leo, Andrea and Raff – who come from different parts of Italy and are at varying stages in their lives.

The film documents the friends’ journeys as they discover their gender identities.

A description of the documentary on the Berlin International Film Festival shared that each person’s “gender biographies” are different. But they all face the same “societal barriers to their social, physical and legal changes” documented in the film.

Elliot Page said in a statement that Nel Mio Nome stood out to him because it “so artfully and intentionally presents all the different pieces that make up a person’s identity”.

They continued: “Knowing that Bassetti consulted closely with his trans son throughout production is so beautiful to me, and I think that lived experience and input is clear in the film’s perspective.

“I’m honoured to be on board and can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Bassetti explained that his experience as the parent of a trans child allowed him to have the confidence to “delve” into the emotional stories of the film’s protagonists.

“My personal experience as a parent has allowed me, as a director, to find the necessary self-assurance to approach the protagonists of this story, to delve into their emotions, and establish an intimate relationship built on trust and complicity,” Bassetti said.

He also thanked Elliot Page for adding his “lived perspective to help our film find its way in the world”.

Nel Mio Nome will premiere at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival, which is set to kick off on 10 February. The festival runs until 20 February, and the full programme for the event will be announced at the start of the month.

A year after coming out publicly as trans, Elliot Page continues to use his profile to highlight trans lives and advocate for trans rights.
