And Just Like That’s Che Diaz ‘isn’t here to be liked’, says Sara Ramirez – and it’s just as well

And Just Like That… star Sara Ramirez didn’t join the Sex and the City reboot to represent a community.

In a series where Big died on a Peloton, Miranda bordered on Karen-hood and Carrie peed in a bottle, Che Diaz has somehow become the biggest talking point of And Just Like That…

They’ve divided Sex and the City fans with their stand-up, terrible (let’s face it) podcast, and perhaps most of all, their odd insistence on full-naming themself at every given opportunity.

Che is written to be bolshy and in-your face. When it was first announced that Sara Ramirez would be joining the Sex and the City sequel, the non-binary character was described as “a big presence” with an “outrageous sense of humour”.

And it seems as though Ramirez had an inkling Che might turn some fans off.

“Che isn’t here to be liked, Che isn’t here for anyone’s approval,” the actor said at a roundtable, per Insider.

“Che is not here to represent the entire LGBTQ+ community or a spectrum of Spanish-speaking people or Latin-identified people or Hispanic-identified people. They’re here to just be themselves.”

“No community is a monolith,” they added.

As And Just Like That… enters its home stretch, there’s no escaping the Che Diaz of it all.

This week’s episode, directed by Cynthia Nixon, saw Miranda fantasise about the non-binary podcaster while masturbating, and then getting into a huge fight with Charlotte about the extra-marital fingering session the two shared.

While Charlotte admitted to having had a sex dream about Che herself, she was disgusted by Miranda betraying her husband and told her she wasn’t “progressive enough” – perhaps a hint that Mrs Goldenblatt is about to enter her Woke Charlotte era.

The episode ended with Miranda DMing Che – lest we forget this is a new! modern! reboot – asking them to “hang out some time”.

We couldn’t help wonder, will the two embark on a queer love story for the ages? Or will Rambo’s next kitchen-scream-sesh be moans of heartbreak?
