Sex and the City reboot teases Miranda’s ‘gay awakening’ in ‘intimate and charged’ new scene

Miranda Hobbes and Che Diaz share an intimate moment in the Sex and the City reboot (And Just Like That…)

Fans are overjoyed as the latest episode of Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That… seems to tease a queer storyline for Miranda Hobbes.

The show’s third episode sees Cynthia Nixon’s character Miranda and the gang go to see Che Diaz (played by non-binary icon Sara Ramirez) perform stand-up comedy for a Netflix special. 

Che urging the crowd to “step outside of that box” seemed to strike a chord with Miranda, who earlier in the episode had questioned her relationship with Steve, admitting that the two hadn’t had sex in years.

After the show, Miranda told Carrie and Charlotte she was heading home, but instead snuck into Che’s after-show party.

There, Che intimately blew marijuana smoke into Miranda’s mouth. The Sex and the City icon stood there stunned, in what fans are calling her “gay awakening”.

Despite Miranda and Steve still being together, fans believe this shot teased a possible queer storyline between the two. 

Writer Julie Rottenberg seemed to hint heavily at a possible queer storyline, telling TVLine: “I think this season is all about change for her.” 

Fans leapt on the intimate scene, with one Twitter user saying: “Miranda Hobbes just experienced her gay awakening.”

Another said: “Miranda said she gonna go to the afterparty and LIVE. I know that’s right, late-in-life lesbian.”

One predicted that the scene with Che would transform Miranda and Steve’s relationship, saying: “Miranda is going to get into an open relationship with Steve so she can explore her lesbian side… mark my words.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ramirez said: “Che is this very sexy, funny, confident human – a messy, dynamic, interesting, non-binary, queer Mexican Irish American character. 

“Cynthia Nixon is a phenomenal actor, as we know. I was so excited to work with her. She and (her wife) Christine actually invited me over to their home prior to filming, so I got a chance to meet Cynthia and talk to her.”

On their scene with Nixon in episode three, they said: “We were going for something intimate and charged, and it sounds like we accomplished that goal.

“What I can say is that they are two very powerful, very confident people who are both unafraid to speak their authentic truths. And when you get two energies like that in the room, you can expect a really interesting dynamic to appear, and you can expect some serious electricity.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Charlotte’s youngest child Rose told her that she doesn’t feel “like a girl”, while Carrie had an unexpected confrontation with Natasha.

And Just Like That… airs on Thursdays at 9pm on the Sky Comedy channel.
