Samantha Jones’ whereabouts in Sex and the City reboot finally explained

The release of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, inches ever closer, and it has finally been revealed how Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones will be written out of the show.

And Just Like That… will see Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) all reprise their original roles, but Samantha will tragically be absent.

Cattrall has long said that she had no plans to return to the Sex and the City series or movies, saying in 2017: “This isn’t about more money. It’s not about more scenes. It’s not about any of those things. This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another.”

Since the the reboot was announced, fans have been desperate to find out how she will be written out, even fearing that she could be killed off.

But a “show source” reportedly told the Daily Mail that Samantha will actually be “thriving” and living her best life in London.

They said: “We couldn’t have Samantha roaming around New York City and not have the other women not interacting with her. It just wouldn’t have made sense.

“Sending her to Los Angeles wasn’t an option as we’d done that in the first movie, so having her character based in London really was the perfect way to keep her alive and explain her absence.’

“Viewers will learn that she is thriving in England even though she has fallen out with Carrie.”

It seems the show’s creators are still hoping Cattrall will change her mind about returning to the reboot, as the source added: “Carrie is the one who has the tough time without Samantha and by the end of And Just Like That… you’ll see Carrie extend the olive branch and try and rekindle the friendship.

“We have high hopes that by the time we begin filming the second season, Kim will have joined the show and Samantha Jones can make a triumphant return to the big apple.”

They added: “We want Kim back. She was missed on set. We all understand why she feels the way she does. We get it.

“We just want her to come back for future seasons… Samantha Jones is one of television’s all time much loved characters and Kim is a phenomenal actress who brings her to life perfectly. She needs to come home, if not for us, but for the fans that adore her.”

Although Samantha will be missing from And Just Like That, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte will be joined by a host of new characters in the highly-anticipated Sex and the City reboot.

Sara Ramírez is set to play an “outrageously funny” queer, non-binary podcast host, Empire’s Nicole Ari Parker will play Lisa Todd Wexley, documentarian and mother of three, Homeland’s Sarita Choudhury will take the role of “single, self-made powerhouse Manhattan real estate broker, Seema Patel”, and Luke Cage star Karen Pittman will be Nya Wallace, a “brilliant, challenging Columbia Law professor”.

The show will also check back in with some old faces, including Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone), as well as Steve (David Eigenberg), Charlotte’s husband Harry (Evan Handler), Mr Big (Chris Noth) and Aiden (John Corbett).

And Just Like That… is set to be released in the UK on 9 December, 2021, on HBO.
