A progress update on The Sims 4 and non-binary pronouns has been confirmed for early 2022, leading to fan speculation that pronouns will be added into the game next year.

Video game developer Maxis said it will be sharing news about pronouns in January 2022 following a period of research and data collection around non-binary language.

This was sparked by a Change.org petition that called for non-binary pronouns to be added into The Sims 4 and garnered more than 20,000 signatures.

During a Maxis livestream, The Sims 4 producer SimGuru said: “This past May we opened up about our pursuit for non-binary language in The Sims.

“Since then we researched global language characteristics, connected with consultants and collected data on areas where change may be needed.”

SimGuru added that Maxis wants to share information before pushing out the pronouns update, and that the team will also be seeking further feedback, according to CBR.

“In January 2022, during the first Inside Maxis of the new year, we’re hosting a fireside chat with members of our development team where we will share an update, including the research completed to date, more on our partnership with our external experts and the work-in-progress wireframes. Make sure to tune in!” SimGuru said.

The Sims 4 adding pronouns is ‘a win for the enbies’

Fans of The Sims 4 have been asking for pronoun options to be introduced into the bestselling game for years, and the January 2022 update has led to increased speculation, and excitement, that the pronouns update will be rolled out early next year.

“It’s the WAY that The Sims is going to be able to tell us how they’re doing with the pronoun update,” one Twitter user posted. “Knowing that we’re THIS much closer to knowing how pronouns will be implemented in game makes my heart so freaking full I actually cried no joke.”

THE SIMS 4 IS GETTING A PRONOUNS UPDATE IN JANUARY ?!?!?!? THIS IS A WIN FOR THE ENBIES,” another Twitter user said.

“NONBINARY PRONOUNS AND STORY PROGRESSION ARE COMING TO THE SIMS IM SO HAPPY,” said another.

Several others shared their excitement with liberal use of both emojis and capital letters.
