Dave Chappelle and DaBaby nominated for Grammys and people are pointing out the glaringly obvious

Cancel culture has claimed yet more victims after scandal-hit DaBaby, Louis CK, Marilyn Manson and Dave Chappelle… all scored nominations for the 2022 Grammys.

Nominees for the 64th annual Grammy Awards were announced Tuesday (23 November).

Manson, accused of abuse, and DaBaby, accused of homophobia, were both nominated for appearing on Kanye West’s Donda, which received a nod for album of the year.

Comedian Louis CK, accused by five women of sexual misconduct, and Chapelle, accused of transphobia, were picked for best comedy album and best-spoken word album respectively.

Both Manson and DaBaby are in the running for a nomination after the Recording Academy, the governing body of the Grammys, lifted a rule that meant only those who contribute 33 per cent on the album’s playing time were eligible.

Not anymore, the body voted in May, as part of a host of robust changes to the decades-old nominating process to better acknowledge typically overlooked collaborators.

The Recording Academy also expanded the ballots for the top four categories – album, record, song of the year and best new artist – to include 10 nominees rather than eight.

But this means Manson and DaBaby have slipped in to score nominations, with DaBaby also picking up another nomination in the same category for Justin Bieber’s Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe).

“So Marilyn Manson, Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, and DaBaby are all nominated for Grammy Awards,” a Twitter user pointed out.

“Someone tell me how ‘cancel culture’ irrevocably ruins people’s careers again. Just for old times’ sake.”

Indeed, Chappelle, DaBaby and CK have all forcefully decried so-called “cancel culture” for facing the consequences of their actions. Yet despite being apparently banished and their careers halted, they were all nominated for Grammys in 2022, one of the world’s top music awards.

In the long list of accusations facing this year’s nominees, Manson, the pasty rock singer, was accused by actor Evan Rachek Wood of “grooming her” as a teen before “horrifically abusing her for years”.

Manson has denied any wrongdoing.

DaBaby faced a fallout after he ranted about gay people and people living with HIV during his Rolling Loud Miami set in July.

He wrongly suggested to the crowd that people living with HIV die “in two, three weeks” from the virus and made inflamatory comments about queer men who “suck d**k”.

The rapper whined about being “cancelled” before, well, performing at the Rolling Loud stage in New York City and is set to embark on a headlining tour.

CK, meanwhile, confessed in 2017 to sexual misconduct with women. “The stories are true,” he said in a statement published on The New York Times.

The Academy announced it had selected CK’s album, Sincerely Louis CK, for nomination.

Chappelle and the poet Amir Sulaiman are nominated for the Netflix special 8:46, released in the summer of 2020.

But the 48-year-old other special, The Closer, became a lightning rod for criticism for mocking and targeting trans people.

It made inroads within Netflix itself, touching off a walkout in protest against the streaming giant’s CEO Ted Sarandos.

The Grammys will be held 31 January next year at the Cyrpto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.
