Adele has finally made her long-awaited comeback with her new song “Easy On Me”, the debut single from her fourth album 30 – and the world is already obsessed.

The singer dropped the new song and its accompanying music video at midnight – and the fan reaction was instant after six long years in the wilderness without her dulcet tones.

The beautifully shot music video starts off with Adele walking around an empty house – a clear throwback to the “Hello” music video – while wearing an instantly iconic vinyl coat. She then leaves the house and gets into her car where she puts a tape in the cassette player.

A “sold” sign tells us that the old house is gone. The black and white music video shows Adele driving along long, winding roads while towing a trailer full of her possessions.

The song’s lyrics see her directly address her son Angelo, asking him to “go easy” on her for divorcing his father, singing that she was “still a child” when she got married.

Midway through, the “Easy On Me” music video transitions to colour, suggesting that better times are on the way for Adele and her legion of sobbing fans.

Lil Nas X was among those to heap praise on Adele for her dramatic return to the music industry. The rapper, in a since deleted tweet, wrote: “‘Easy On Me’ is so good. It’s so crazy to think the last time Adele released new music I was sitting on stan Twitter. I feel like I’m 15 again.”

Countless others people rushed to Twitter to share their love for Adele’s very glamorous comeback single.

The new song marks the start of Adele’s hotly-anticipated 30 era. Fans have been waiting what seems like forever for the queen of the ballad to return and emotionally destroy them in one fell swoop.

The singer teased “Easy On Me” last week with a short clip from the music video which promptly broke the internet. She later confirmed speculation that her new album would be named 30, following on from 19, 21 and 25.

In a statement posted on social media, Adele said she was “nowhere near” where she hoped she would be when she first started writing her new album three years ago.

“I rely on routine and consistency to feel safe, I always have,” Adele wrote. “And yet there I was knowingly – willingly even, throwing myself into a maze of absolute mess and inner turmoil!” she added, seemingly referencing her divorce.

The singer went on to say she’s learned “a lot of blistering home truths” about herself in the last few years and that she has “shed many layers”.

She went on to admit that she had become “so consumed” by her own grief in the lead up to writing the album. “I’ve painstakingly rebuilt my house and my heart since then and this album narrates it. Home is where the heart is,” she wrote.

Adele will release her fourth studio album on 19 November, just in time for the lucrative Christmas market, and fans can pre-order the release on vinyl and CD from Amazon, HMV and Rough Trade.

There was widespread expectation that 30 would be released on that date after Taylor Swift mysteriously brought the release date of her re-recording of Red forward by a week.
