An anti-LGBT+ minister in Oklahoma has been arrested on suspicion of molesting young boy at bus stop, after he was beaten up by the child’s father.

Michael Coghill previously worked as a youth minister at the anti-LGBT+ Choctaw Church of Christ in Oklahoma, which teaches that AIDS is “a sign from God that homosexual behaviour is sinful” and that America is in an “alphabet gender war”. He later went on to work at Lakehoma Church of Christ, which teaches that homosexuals will be “punished” for their sins.

On 22 September, the 33-year-old anti-LGBT+ minister was arrested by Oklahoma City Police Department after allegedly touching a nine-year-old boy at a school bus stop.

According to News9, the father of the victim, whose is unnamed to protect his identity, said his son had claimed that Coghill had previously “touched him on the back” at the bus stop, and that “he didn’t like the way it made him feel”.

So, the dad decided to wait in his car while his son was at the bus stop, and watch to see if the minister returned.

Oklahoma City police sergeant Dillon Quirk told KFOR: “Yesterday, our adult that was made aware of the situation, actually stopped, retrieved a recording device, monitored at the bus stop, observed and viewed the suspect run past the bus stop, stop, come back, and then touch the juvenile.”

The Oklahoma minister’s anti-LGBT+ former church is holding a prayer vigil for him following his arrest

Since his arrest, Lakehoma Church of Christ has fired Michael Coghill from his job as a minister.

In a statement posted to Facebook, it said: “We were heartbroken to learn of the incident that occurred yesterday morning involving Mike Coghill, our discipleship minister. And we were shocked to learn this news through social media today.

“Mike has a clean background check, and we have received no reports or claims against him during his tenure at Lakehoma. We will be fully cooperating with law enforcement as needed.”

However his former employer, Choctaw Church of Christ, announced that it would be holding a prayer vigil for the alleged child abuser.

Choctaw Church of Christ pastor Marti Kessler said: “My hope is there’s something, some kind of evidence, that in the end will prove Mike’s innocence.”
