Kristen Stewart had ‘spooky, spiritual’ experience on set of Princess Diana film

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer

Kristen Stewart felt “spooky, spiritual feelings” while filming her new Princess Diana film Spencer.

The film is described as a “fable” that follows Princess Diana as she comes to terms with the fact that her marriage is all but over while spending Christmas with the Windsors at Sandringham.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times shortly after Spencer debuted to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, Kristen Stewart opened up about the eerie filming process.

Referring to a scene where “Diana communes with the ghost of Anne Boleyn”, the actor was asked if she has ever had any paranormal encounters herself.

Stewart replied: “No. But I felt some spooky, spiritual feelings making this movie.

“Even if I was just fantasising. I felt like there were moments where I kind of got the sign-off. It’s scary to tell a story about someone who’s not alive anymore and who already felt so invaded.”

She continued: “I never wanted to feel like we were invading anything, just that we were kind of adding to the multiplicity of a beautiful thing.”

Princess Diana ‘felt so alive’ to Kristen Stewart while filming Spencer

Kristen Stewart, who is already being tipped for an Oscar nomination for her performance, went on to explain that Diana “felt so alive” to her while they were filming – “even if it’s all between the ears”.

“But there were moments where my body and mind would forget she was dead,” Stewart explained.

“And suddenly, I would just have an image of what happened. And remember who she left behind. And I was amazed by the renewed emotion. Every single time. Maybe two or three times a week, I would just fully break down about the fact that she had died.

“I just could not come to terms with it, because I was fighting to keep her alive every single day.”

Stewart said those moments of remembering that Princess Diana was dead were “absolutely lacerating” during the tense filming process.

“It just destroyed me constantly. And that itself felt spiritual… there were times where I was like, ‘Oh, God,’ almost like she was, you know, trying to break through.

“It was weird. And amazing. I’ve never felt anything like it in my life.”
