Sony u-turns on Horizon Forbidden West pricing after robot dinosaur-sized outcry from fans

Horizon Forbidden West

Sony has u-turned on controversial and confusing pricing for its forthcoming title Horizon Forbidden West.

As previously reported, Sony revealed in a PlayStation Blog the prices of the various versions of the game available to pre-order.

However, players were restricted to either the PS4 or PS5 versions without a free upgrade, unless they bought one of the more expensive versions of the game.

That means potentially buying a Digital Deluxe version that’s more expensive than a physical disc, despite only being available as a download code.

In a swift retreat and change of plan, a free upgrade will now be available when transferring the game from PS4 to PS5.

Sony has now updated their blog post with a statement from Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark,” reads the statement.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

What’s more, the company is committing to a $10 upgrade fee for first-party exclusive cross-gen titles.

Specifically, this will apply to the forthcoming God of War and Gran Turismo 7 games.

Meanwhile, players looking to buy the top level Regalla Edition of the game have been given a first look at the Tremortusk statue that comes with the collection by head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst.

The video shows a beautiful looking prototype of the model. “The final Tremortusk statue will be even more intricate and awe-inspiring,” he notes.
