A man allegedly beat up a New York City subway rider while yelling homophobic insults at him, stoking fear after a wave of anti-gay hate crimes on the transit system.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was on the northbound J train as it pulled into Brooklyn Junction station in Ocean Hill on 26 August when the incident took place.

A man beelined it towards the victim at around 11:30pm, the force’s hate crime division tweeted, who began calling him anti-gay slurs before punching him repeatedly in the head.

“I’m not with that gay s**t,” the man barked at the victim, the police claimed. The assailant stayed on the carriage as it left the station.

Fellow riders sought to help the victim who had suffered a bruised lip, but he refused medical attention.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force has said it is investigating the incident as a hate crime, 1010 Wins reported.

According to surveillance footage of the suspect shared by NYPD Crime Stoppers, the man wore a black baseball cap, a graphic t-shirt and cargo shorts during the assault. He carried a can of Arizona Iced Tea black bookbag.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the city’s main public transit agency which runs the subway and buses, has been riddled in recent months by a string of anti-LGBT+ hate crimes.

Only last month were two people on a train heaving with riders attacked by a man who lobbed anti-gay slurs at them before striking them in the face.

As the victims fled the train, a woman who sought to help them entered the attacker’s firing range. He punched her in the face and fled on foot.

The victims all suffered pain and swelling on their faces.

That same month, a man was stabbed with an ice pick while his attacker yelled “f****t” on the D train heading towards the Bronx. The man targeted him simply because the victim stood up when the alleged assailant sat next to him.
