Andrew Lloyd Webber’s inclusive, OTT Cinderella musical extends West End run thanks to rave reviews

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella is extending its West End run to May 2022.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella is extending its West End run, it has been announced.

The musical, which reimagines the classic story, opened at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on 17 August.

And although it’s only just opened, it has already been confirmed that Cinderella will extend its run and be showing at the theatre until 29 May 2022.

Originally running until February 2022, this news follows sold-out previews and rave reviews from critics during its opening week.

In a five-star review the Guardian called it “terrifically OTT and silly but warm and inclusive”, while WhatsOnStage say the show was “worth waiting for” and calling lead Carrie Hope Fletcher “perfectly cast”.

The Evening Standard also hint at the musical’s inclusiveness saying there’s a “delightful surprise later that’s crucial to the plot and that has frankly been a long time coming in a major West End musical.”

The musical, which rethinks the gender relationships and beauty shaming in the classic fairy tale, is set in the picturesque Belleville.

The only person who refuses to live in the “perfect” town is the loud-mouthed and dripping with disdain Cinderella, who’s dealing with a new spark in her friendship with Prince Sebastian and becoming the identikit beauty that everyone has always told her to be.

The show features a brand new score by Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Oscar-nominated David Zippel and a script from Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell.

The theatre legend recently said he was “going to open [the show], come hell or high water”, after it was unsure whether theatres could reopen due to concerns about the Delta variant of COVID-19.

When asked by The Telegraph what he would do if the government demands they postpone the shows, Webber replied: “We will say: come to the theatre and arrest us.”

Well it looks like he got his wish granted and the show opened in time – and you can find out how to get tickets for Cinderella below.
