Madonna has dropped a teaser trailer for a new behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling her fateful Madame X tour.

The film, also titled Madame X, will be available via Paramount+ from 8 October, the streaming service announced on Thursday (15 July).

Filmed in Lisbon, Portugal, and directed by Ricardo Gomes, the documentary will reveal never-before-seen footage of a tour pleagued by injury, coronavirus and last-minute cancellations.

It features 48 on-stage performers including Madonna’s own children, as well as musicians and dancers from around the world and the all-female Orquestra Batukadeiras.

“Sharing my vision with global audiences has been profoundly meaningful to me,” Madonna said of the upcoming documentary in a press release.

“The opportunity to bring its message and the incandescent artistry of all involved to an even wider audience comes at a time when music is so deeply needed to remind us of the sacred bond of our shared humanity.”

The documentary promises to give an intimate look at the battles Madonna had with her hip and knee injuries, which forced her to back out of several shows in the US, the UK and Portugal.

The 61-year-old star was said to be in “indescribable pain” throughout much of the trip, admitting: “With every song I sang, I said a prayer that I would make it to the next and get through the show.”

Combined with production issues, these health concerns caused her to cancel 18 out of the 75 planned stops on the tour. She eventually concluded the entire tour three days before its final date due to coronavirus restrictions being imposed in Paris.

Despite her injuries, reviewers said the show was among Madonna’s very best, with the singer making good on her promise of an up-close-and-personal experience.
