Lil Nas X defends Madonna amid fierce backlash over ‘petty’ response to award show kiss
Lil Nas X has defended Madonna after she was slammed for comparing his already-iconic awards show kiss to her own.
Lil Nas X shared a steamy kiss with a dancer during his Egyptian-themed performance of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name) at the BET Awards 2021 on Sunday (27 June).
Following the performance, Madonna took to Instagram to post a side-by-side image comparing his kiss to her own with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV VMAs in 2003. She captioned the story: “#DidItFirst.”
Madonna was heavily criticised for attempting to make the moment about herself, and for comparing her queer-baiting performance to a gay artist defiantly celebrating his sexuality in an industry that has been less-than-welcoming to LGBT+ folk.
Some referenced how her song “Vogue” lifted from Black and Latinx ballroom culture, “whitewashing” it in the process.
The woman who quite literally stole/whitewashed an big element of Black queer culture, made a ton of money off of it with Vogue and has been heavily criticized for it, is flexing on a 22 year emerging Black queer artist to be recognized for a same sex kiss when she is STRAIGHT?! pic.twitter.com/SBnTq35Mm5

Two cis-het white women kissing on stage for queer baiting and cheap controversy is NOTHING like two gay black men kissing in front of a notoriously homophobic crowd.
Maybe instead of this, she should be tweeting in supporting of the woman she's kissing in the picture. https://t.co/0AWh2tifIt

prob just me. madonna's post comes across as petty toward a young, black, queer man

For a woman whose career was built on the backs of queer people of color to shoot down the social, cultural, and artistic progress of a Black gay man in an industry that has historically dismissed queer people of color is abhorrent. 🖕🏻, @Madonna.

Amid fan backlash, Lil Nas X clarified that he and Madonna “are friends” and that it was “just a joke”.

After all, Madonna and Lil Nas X are known to be friends. They once shared beers and banter before duetting “Old Town Road” together during Madonna’s Madame X tour.
Other users sought to defend the pop megastar, arguing that the Instagram story was a joke while re-training focus back to Madonna’s decades-long contributions to LGBT+ advocacy.
2 things I think the gay community forgets: 1) Madonna is bisexual and 2) her contributions to LGBTQ+ rights and HIV activism have been immense, impassioned and meaningful. https://t.co/FR9NUzt5l3

It pisses me off that the younger gays (my age and younger) do not realize how much work Madonna did for LGBTQIA Rights and AIDS awareness. She has always been more than a performer, but a trailblazer in human rights. Thank You @Madonna💕🏳️🌈💋 https://t.co/HVKhz4gic7

In a series of tweets, he said that he would continue to express his sexuality even if it makes others “uncomfortable”.
“Y’all live your lives trying your best to appease straight ppl,” he wrote.
“Y’all are uncomfortable with what I do because y’all are afraid they will be uncomfortable with you.
“Work on yourselves, I love who I am and whatever I decide to do. Get there.”
