Britney Spears’ family ‘want the best for her’ – despite her wanting to sue them

Britney Spears’ brother-in-law Jamie Watson has defended her family after she spoke out against the conservatorship she has been trapped in for more than a decade.

Spears has been living under a court-ordered conservatorship, which has for the most part granted her father significant control over her life, since 2008 – and she finally addressed the controversial legal arrangement in a court appearance last week.

Speaking to a Los Angeles court virtually, Britney Spears said she would “sue” her family if she could over their alleged mistreatment over the years.

But Jamie Watson, husband of Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn Spears, sought to downplay the singer’s comments.

“I can assure you her family loves her and wants the best for her,” Watson told The New York Post on Friday (25 June).

“I wouldn’t be around people who weren’t. Who wouldn’t want to be in support of Britney?”

Britney Spears said her father should be in jail

Britney Spears’ court appearance sent shockwaves across the world last week as she spoke in-depth about her conservatorship – which has been the subject of significant scrutiny in recent months – for the first time publicly.

Britney Spears told the court that her father, and anybody else involved in the conservatorship, should be in jail.

“I’ve told the world I’m happy and OK. I lied. I am not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane. And I’m depressed,” she told a Los Angeles judge.

She also said she wants to have another baby, but said her conservators have stopped her from having a contraceptive device removed and have prevented her from marrying boyfriend Sam Asghari.

“I feel ganged up on. I feel bullied and I feel left out and alone,” she said.

Britney Spears’ parents, Jamie and Lynn Spears, have not yet spoken in detail about her bombshell claims – but her sister Lynn Spears addressed the furore on her Instagram Stories on Monday (28 June).

In a wide-ranging, emotionally-charged video, Jamie Lynn Spears said she hadn’t spoken out about the conservatorship sooner because she was waiting for Britney to take the lead.

“Maybe I didn’t support her the way the public would like me to with a hashtag on a public platform, but I can assure you that I’ve supported my sister long before there was a hashtag and I’ll support her long after. Note that,” she said.

Jamie Lynn said Britney knows she loves and supports her, adding: “I’m not my family, I am my own person and I am speaking for myself.

“I’m so proud of her for using her voice. I’m so proud of her for requesting new counsel, like I told her to do many years ago – oh, not on a big public platform, but just in a personal conversation between two sisters, so I’m very proud that she’s taken that step.”

It is not yet clear what will happen next for Britney Spears. Her court appointed lawyer Samuel Ingham III will now be expected to file a formal request to have her conservatorship dissolved.

However, her legal representation may also change. Speaking to the court last week, the singer said she wanted the freedom to hand pick her own lawyer – an opportunity that was denied to her in 2008 when she was first placed under the conservatorship.

A former boyfriend of the singer, who was not named, told The New York Post that she asked her lawyer “four times a week” to try and bring about an end to her conservatorship – but he claimed such requests never materialised.

“I hope she sues the s**t out of them for this. I will testify if it comes to that,” the former boyfriend said.
