Nike says: “The 2021 Be True collection is inspired by the idea that sport can be the setting for radical inclusivity. At the same time, sport is richer when it includes the diverse stories, backgrounds and orientations of every individual person.
“A wide spectrum of nine LGBTQIA+ flags, highlighting the personal stories deep inside each stripe colour, is broadly explored in this year’s footwear.”
The range features Nike silhouettes including the Blazer ’77 Low, the Air Max Pre Day, the All Out Utility Slide and Infinity React Run 2.
The sneakers see Nike’s iconic swoosh embellished with rainbow colours, including a pastel design on the Blazer shoes and a shiny design on the Air Max trainers.
Also, all of the shoes will be packaged in a rainbow box.
The collection is also expected to include apparel items which will be rolled out across Pride Month.
There’s already a pair of ‘Be True’ shorts on the website which are “coming soon,” featuring a subtle rainbow swoosh on the side.
Plus there’s also a t-shirt in black which features a graphic of nine Pride flags on the back.
The campaign sees Nike team up with digital star Bretman Rock, pro soccer player Shiho Shimoyamada and trans student and advocate Gia Parr.
Bretman says: “Strength has no gender, it’s really just measured from within. With sports, if you’re sweating, you’re an athlete.”
While Gia adds: “I want trans people to be seen for all that they are, beyond just being trans. There is so much more to us.”
Nike is donating $625,000 to 18 LGBT+ organisations which focus on advocacy in sports, creating safe spaces and elevating the history of the community.
