Play as bisexual hero Star-Lord in Square Enix’s stonking new Guardians of the Galaxy game

Square Enix Guardians of the Galaxy

A new Guardians of the Galaxy game is on the way from Square Enix and Eidos Montréal.

The game was revealed at the Square Enix Presents event at E3, with a considerable amount of time showing gameplay and story from the title.

It’s a single player story-driven third-person action adventure game, which means plenty of jumping, shooting, and decision making.

That’s alongside plenty of trademark humour and pop music, of course.

No word on whether romances are included in the story choices, but Star-Lord is canonically bisexual so we can hope for some LGBT+ representation.

The Guardians of the Galaxy game is due out on 26 October across PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and PC.

It was a good showing for Marvel fans, with Square Enix also showing off the Black Panther expansion for their Marvel’s Avengers game.

With a vibe similar to the film but its own distinct designs, the expansion is set in the fictional African nation and features plenty of Black Panther’s gymnastic abilities in a battle for Vibranium.

The expansion is due out in August and will be free to all existing players.

We also got a fresh look at Life Is Strange: True Colors and the empathetic abilities of bisexual lead Alex Chen.

Continuing the supernatural themes of the series, Alex will be able to see the emotions of other characters as colours, from which she will make decisions on how to best assist (or hinder) the residents of Haven Springs.

When her brother dies in a mysterious accident, she must lean into these powers to uncover the truth.

The game is releasing on 10 September across PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and PC.

Elsewhere, the presentation was a little disappointing with a focus on too few games that lacked wow factor.

Babylon’s Fall is a new action game from Platinum Games (Bayonetta, NieR: Automata), with a focus on online co-operative play coming to PlayStation consoles and PC (via Steam).

Platinum are known for their combat mechanics, so expect Babylon’s Fall to be a fun hack and slash, even if its fantasy world seems a little rote.

A developer interview video has plenty more details.

Another big reveal was Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin.

Developed by Team Ninja (Nioh, Ninja Gaiden), the game is an action RPG that will explore the origins of the Final Fantasy franchise, with plenty of nods to series staples as the three protagonists defeat Chaos.

“While it is Final Fantasy, it feels different—but there’s no doubt that the blood of Final Fantasy runs through its veins,” said Tetsuya Nomura, Creative Producer for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin.

However, many fans are disappointed by the rough graphical presentation, generic characters and dark, gritty style that’s far away from the vibrant colourful worlds we’ve come to expect from the Final Fantasy series.

A demo for the game has been released on PlayStation 5, but many gamers have reported issues with it. Square Enix is working to resolve this.
