Jameela Jamil bags major Marvel role as iconic She-Hulk supervillain

Jameela Jamil is joining She-Hulk, a new Marvel Disney Plus series, making her MCU debut as a menacing, socially-savvy villain.

The upcoming series follows lawyer Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), who inherits The Hulk’s powers after receiving a blood transfusion from his alter ego Bruce Banner, her cousin. Unlike the original superhero, Wright can retain most of her personality, intelligence and emotional control when she transforms into She-Hulk.

Variety reported that Jameela Jamil will play villain Mary MacPherran, also known as Titania, in She-Hulk. MacPherran is a popular influencer and socialite who hides a dark side of her personality. In the comics, the character is a criminal and mercenary genetically enhanced by Marvel supervillain Doctor Doom.

The actor and television presenter is best known for her starring role in the hit NBC comedy The Good Place, which ran from 2016 until its finale in 2020. Since appearing on the show, Jamil has starred in a host of shows including Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous; the DuckTales reboot; and Mira, Royal Detective. She also hosts the TBS game show The Misery Index and is a judge on HBO Max’s Legendary.

Jameela Jamil will join other She-Hulk cast members Tim Roth, Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Mark Ruffalo – who will reprise his role as The Hulk/Bruce Banner in the series. Roth is set to return as the Abomination over a decade since the villain last appeared in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk.

Jamil’s character, Mary MacPherran, was first introduced into the Marvel universe in 1984’s Super Heroes Secret Wars #3. The character was born prematurely and was often overlooked by her family and peers. She grew bitter over the years and fantasised about taking revenge on her tormentors.

MacPherran was eventually abducted and teleported to an alien planet that served as a battle area for many Marvel heroes and villains. She ended up near the supervillain’s base where she was taken in by Doctor Doom, who altered her body and transformed her into Titania. MacPherran developed a rivalry with She-Hulk, and the two often battled each other in the Marvel comics.

The upcoming She-Hulk series is directed by Ana Valia and Kat Coiro with Rick & Morty‘s Jessica Gao serving as head writer. It is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in 2022.
