Ubisoft backtrack and admit Far Cry 6 – a game about fascist dictatorships – is political after all

Far Cry 6 is political, according to the game’s Narrative Director Navid Khavari.
New details were revealed on the game in a gameplay reveal on Friday 28 May. It’s set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara that’s heavily inspired by Cuba at the time of the revolution.
However, speaking with TheGamer, Khavari noted “our game doesn’t want to make a political statement about what’s happening in Cuba specifically.”
This was taken out of context as Ubisoft not wanting to make a political game, despite its obvious influences.
Ubisoft and Khavari have since released an official statement that begins: “Our story is political.”
“There are hard, relevant discussions in Far Cry 6 about the conditions that lead to the rise of fascism in a nation, the costs of imperialism, forced labor, the need for free-and-fair elections, LGBTQ+ rights, and more within the context of Yara, a fictional island in the Caribbean,” it reads.
The team’s inspirations include Cuba and other countries that have experienced political revolutions.
“In our approach we made sure to seek creators and collaborators for our team who can speak personally to the history and cultures of the regions we were inspired by. We also brought on experts and consultants to examine the game story multiple times over the course of the project to make sure it was being told with sensitivity,” says the statement.
“It is not for me to decide if we succeeded, but I can say we absolutely tried.
“But if anyone is seeking a simplified, binary political statement specifically on the current political climate in Cuba, they won’t find it.
“What players will find is a story that’s point-of-view attempts to capture the political complexity of a modern, present-day revolution within a fictional context. We have attempted to tell a story with action, adventure, and heart, but that also isn’t afraid to ask hard questions.
“My only hope is that we are willing to let the story speak for itself first before forming hard opinions on its political reflections.”
Far Cry 6 is due for release on 7 October across PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles and PC.
The latest in the long-running series, the new gameplay video reveals much about the fictional setting and open world as well as gameplay elements like crafting weapons and the importance of hiding them from enemies.
Most importantly, it revealed the inclusion of Chorizo an adorable little sausage dog puppy.
