“Central Park Karen” Amy Cooper is suing her former employer, claiming it discriminated against her because she is a white woman.
Cooper was fired by financial services firm Franklin Templeton in May 2020, after she was caught on video making a false 911 call claiming that Christian Cooper, a Black birdwatcher, was threatening her life.
She was charged by Manhattan prosecutors last July for filing a false police report. Christian Cooper (no relation) did not support the prosecution, and charges were dropped in February after she completed five sessions in therapy.
Now, Amy Cooper has now filed a complaint against Franklin Templeton, alleging that the firm failed to properly investigate the incident. She claims the company would have conducted a better investigation if she was of a different race or gender, and that she wouldn’t have been fired “but for [her] race”.
She is seeking damages for race and gender discrimination, defamation, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Amy Cooper’s complaint stated the company’s actions in firing her “caused her such severe emotional distress that she was suicidal”.
“Plaintiff’s personal and professional life has been destroyed by the knowingly false statements defendants made,” it adds.
The complaint, filed in the Manhattan federal court on Tuesday (25 May), claims that “even a perfunctory investigation” would have shown that she did not “shout” at the Black man or “call the police… because she was a racist”, but because she was “alone in the park and frightened to death”.
The incident occured after Christian Cooper asked Amy Cooper to put her dog on a leash to comply with park rules.
In widely-shared footage, Amy Cooper can be seen warning Christian Cooper she will tell police that there is an “African-American man threatening my life”. He can be heard calmly telling her to “please call the cops”.

Amy Cooper claims she lied to police “not because she was a racist – she did these things because she was alone in the park and frightened to death after being selected as the next target of Christian Cooper, an overzealous birdwatcher engaged in Central Park’s ongoing feud between birdwatchers and dog owners”.
Franklin Templeton said in a statement to Reuters that the company “responded appropriately” and believed the “circumstances of the situation speak for themselves”. It added: “We will defend against these baseless claims.”
Lawyers for Amy Cooper declined to comment to Reuters.
