Terrible-sounding Powerpuff Girls reboot derailed after intense backlash

The gritty live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot that no one asked for is getting a drastic redesign after fans reacted in horror to the first-look images.

It looks like there’s trouble in Townsville as Variety reports The CW has paused the Powerpuff Girls premiere and slated the series for a complete rework.

The new adaptation of the 90s cartoon – starring Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup – sees the beloved pint-sized superheroes reunite as a trio of “disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting”.

The live-action remake was first announced in August and hopes were running high – until the internet caught sight of photos from the pilot last month.

“This is why y’all need to leave cartoon as cartoon cause this looks absolutely ridiculous. Three grown ass women flying around in slip dresses & penny loafers,” read one tweet liked nearly 256,000 times.

“The Powerpuff Girls are little girls in primary school. These are grown a** women in Ross outfits & it’s not gonna work. CUT THE CAMERAS,” wrote another.

As fans poured scorn on the new look, drawing comparisons with 2020’s much-maligned Sonic movie, The CW network decided to re-shoot the entire pilot and make substantial changes to the show, Variety reports.

However, the series’ four leads are said to still be attached to the project, including Scrubs‘ Donald Faison, who plays the role of Professor Utonium. The rest of the cast and creative team will also remain.
