The story is set at the turn of the 20th century during the Belle Epoque, in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris and follows Christian, a young composer who falls in love with cabaret actress Satine.

The show says audiences will “enter a world of splendour and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur and glory, where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment.”

Similar to the 2001 film, the musical’s score weaves together original songs with popular music for an ultimate mash-up extravaganza.

This includes iconic queer anthems “Toxic”, “Material Girl”, “Bad Romance”, “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and of course “Lady Marmalade”.

Since its premiere on Broadway in 2019 it’s been nominated for 14 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Choreography.

The musical will find out if “can-can” sweep the Tony’s during an upcoming ceremony that will coincide with the reopening of Broadway.

It’s set to resume production in New York City in September 2021 as well as embark on a national US tour and open in Melbourne for the first time.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is based on the revolutionary 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann, which stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

It received positive reviews from critics and helped revive the success of musical films after becoming the first to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 10 years.

The film also spawned the now iconic track “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Lil Kim, Mya and Missy Elliott, with the accompanying video becoming a cultural reset of the 2000s.
