Earth-shattering Mean Girls theory suggests Regina George is a closeted lesbian
A new Mean Girls theory suggesting that Regina George is a closeted lesbian is going viral on TikTok and you know what, it does track.
Mean Girls is undoubtedly a work of art. Since 2004, it’s been the sole basis of an entire generation of gay men’s personalities, gainfully wearing pink each Wednesday and setting up a Google Calendar alert for 3 October to tell that one joke on Twitter.
But as scholars continue to analyse the movie, unearthing jokes that flew over our heads during the first of what will be an infinite number of watches, a new, game-changing theory has been posited by TikTok user Elizabeth.
She’s utterly convinced that Regina George, played effortlessly by Rachel McAdams, is secretly a lesbian.
The Seattle-based bartender starts by stressing that the film is pretty queerphobic.
“Queer panic is one of the driving plot forces,” she says.
She then inserts a clip from Mean Girls of Regina saying she “couldn’t have a lesbian at the party”. You know, that time when she mistook Janis Ian being Lebanese for being a lesbian.
But as Elizabeth points out, as much as she’s fearful of Janis checking out girls, she herself regularly does the same as she deals out fashion criticism. Casual reminder – she literally has a scrapbook crammed with photos and spiteful messages about her fellow female classmates.
“And she doesn’t actually like any of the guys she dates,” she adds, noting that while dating Aaron Samuels, Regina seems more interested in vexing Cady than she is her relationship.
And when her Spring Fling date, Shane Oma, wins the title of Spring Fling King and starts wooing, Regina responds by rolling her eyes. Guys seem disposable to Regina – all just pawns in her plots.
“And you know when people have a tendency to project their insecurities outward and cause problems for everyone else,” Elizabeth continues, showing the moment when Regina snipes that Janice jumping into the arms of women is a “dream come true” for her.
“Until they reach a point where they finally come to accept themselves,” she adds. The movie ends with women literally jumping on Regina after she joins the lacrosse team.

“In conclusion, Regina George’s character arc can be summed up with this tweet,” showing a tweet from a since-suspended account that reads: “When I was 7, I had a crush on a girl in my class and didn’t know how to deal with it.
“So, I wrote her a letter that just said: ‘Get out of my school’.”
