Billy Porter is playing Cinderella‘s Fairy Godmother as genderless because ‘magic has no gender’

The film – which stars Camila Cabello as Cinderella – is currently set to be released in September by Prime Video, meaning Billy Porter fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see his version of the Fairy Godmother on screen.

Speaking to CBS News in March 2020, Porter promised that his version of the legendary fairytale character will be genderless.

“You know it hit me when I was on the set last week how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother, they call it the Fab G. Magic has no gender,” Porter explained.

“We are presenting this character as genderless – at least, that’s how I’m playing it – and it’s really powerful. This is a classic, this is a classic fairytale for a new generation and I think that the new generation is really ready.

“The kids are ready. It’s the grown-ups that are slowing stuff down.”

The hotly-anticipated fairytale revival is described as a “romantic musical comedy”. Idina Menzel, Nicholas Galitzine, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan will also star.
