Lil Nas X is soaring back up to the heavens in the first teaser for his hotly-anticipated new single, “Sun Goes Down”.

The 22-year-old visited the abode of the damned – and gave Satan a lap dance while he was at it – in “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” earlier this year.

After spending weeks incensing critics, Republican governors and Lady Gaga’s bassist, Lil Nas X is now swapping the flames for a cooler, calmer feel for his next single, “Sun Goes Down”.

The hitmaker confirmed on Twitter that the new anthem will drop 21 May and urged fans to pre-save the song on music streamers Spotify and Apple Music.

In the song’s artwork, Lil Nas X goes full Avatar: The Last Airbender, perched on a snaking pathway made of ice floating in the skies, dressed head-to-toe in an angelic white suit.

The track will be released the day before Lil Nas X makes his Saturday Night Live (SNL) debut on 22 May.

Not only will he perform “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, which rocketed to the top 10 in an array of countries, but he confirmed he’ll be performing a new, unnamed song as well – which we can now assume will be “Sun Goes Down”.

His debut album Montero has been slated for a Summer 2021 release date and will also include his festive single “Holiday”.

It remains unknown whether Lil Nas X will give sneaker design another go for the album – he dropped 666 limited edition “Satan shoes” that contained a drop of human blood to mark the release of Montero (Call Me By Your Name). Shoemaking titan Nike sought legal action to block him from selling them.

In a recent interview with GQ the star explained that as his career has taken off, he has grown more confident in his sexuality.

“Even asking guys ‘Yo, are you into me’ or some s**t like that,” Lil Nas X said. “That was never going to happen before because I was like ‘what if they say no?’ But now it’s like: ‘If they say no, then s**t, okay’.”
