Say ‘f**k you’ to rainbow capitalism with these 11 Pride pins from LGBT+ and independent sellers
Disney recently revealed its Pride collection for 2021, however, there’s been a bit of a mixed reaction to the line to say the least.
The Rainbow Disney Collection features enamel pins, apparel and accessories with brands including Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar joining in for the first time ever.
And while some people have celebrated the visibility that brings, other LGBT+ people feel like it’s another example of “overpriced” rainbow capitalism from a company that rarely – if ever – features queer characters in its major shows and films.
The tweet that kicked off the debate featured a picture of Disney’s pride pins with the caption: “anyway, instead of spending money on overpriced corporate pride merch go ahead and support and donate to … any other LGBT+ businesses, creators and charities you see”.

One Twitter user responded to a post about the pins saying: “Disney doesn’t support us they love to market off of us in products like this and queer baiting in their films and shows that they call ‘representation’ in reality they give us nothing but an occasional bone to throw at us”.
There was some positive reaction, with a Twitter user noting that it marks the first merch from Disney featuring the trans, bi and lesbian flags as well as the inclusive Pride flag.
They added: “Merch doesn’t fix Disney’s problem w/ #LGBTQ representation. But someone made the call on these pins and that was a good call.”
Disney has confirmed it will be donating funds to organisations around the world that support LGBT+ communities in recognition of the Pride collection.
But some LGBT+ people and allies will want to ensure their money goes directly to queer people and in particular, independent businesses.
