The only thing the Line of Duty finale got right was the surprise ‘lesbian fairytale’ romance

Line of Duty finale

The final episode of Line of Duty was watched by millions on Sunday (2 May), but the only thing it got right was a “lesbian fairytale” ending for Jo Davidson.

According to the BBC, the finale was the most watched episode of Line of Duty to date, with 12.8 million viewers tuning in, and finally saw the unveiling of “H”.

But the last episode of the sixth series was met with disappointment from viewers and critics alike, with The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan describing it as “fine”, and Metro’s Harry Fletcher writing that the finale “fell flat”.

However the one element that delighted fans was the surprise ending for DCI Davidson (Kelly McDonald), who was entered into witness protection and ended up in the perfect “lesbian fairytale”, complete with a stunning cottage, beautiful girlfriend and a dog.

Journalist Mic Wright wrote on Twitter: “The only bit I genuinely loved was that Jo Davidson got to live her lesbian cottagecore dreams.”

BBC journalist Jane Hill added: “Ah yes, a lesbian fairytale ending.

“Sensible jumpers and a pretty dog. My life in a nutshell. Apart from the witness protection, obvs.”

One Line of Duty fan described Davidson’s ending as “peak lesbian”, adding: “New girlfriend moving in days after going into witness protection, a country cottage, cosy fair isle knit, autumnal walks AND a dog!”

Although fans were happy for Davidson, the fact that she didn’t end up with Kate Fleming was a let-down for some.

“C’mon at the very least we wanted a Kate and Jo ‘moment’, I wanted her to waltz out of that lesbian dream cottage,” said one fan.

Another wrote: “Well bit of an anticlimactic ending really but I guess it’s an accurate representation of life!

“At least Jo got herself a lesbian, a dog and a lovely idyllic cottage to live in.

“Give it a week or so and Kate will pop round I’m sure.”
