Stunning new Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay footage shows what the PS5 can really do

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

In a brand new State of Play presentation, Sony showed off gameplay of the incredible looking Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

The 15 minute video from creative director at Insomniac, Marcus Smith, gave us a detailed glimpse into what the game has in store when it releases on PlayStation 5 on 11 June.

The never-before-seen gameplay included a fresh look at combat, which looks as frenetic and responsive as ever. Ratchet – and new playable female Lombax Rivet – can now dash around levels to evade attacks, or utilise the Rift Tether item to teleport into dimensional tears around the levels.

And the wacky weapons the series is known for make a welcome return. The video showed off returning weapons like the Burst Pistol and new weapons like the shotgun-like Enforcer, the Topiary Sprinkler that turns enemies into plants, and the Shatterbomb grenades.

Outside of combat, Ratchet and Rivet can now dash in the air and run along walls – video game staples, for sure, but giving these characters even more manoeuvrability.

What impresses above all, though, is how Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks set to be a real showcase for the PlayStation 5. That begins with how beautiful and detailed the game looks. Just look at how furry Ratchet looks now.

“Did we mention how stunning and alive our worlds are?” says Smith on the video. He’s not wrong.

Beyond that though, the console’s SSD is put to amazing use. Not only are loading times super fast, but the game is able to teleport you through rifts to entirely new levels in an instant. That even happens in the middle of a boss fight as you seamlessly battle across multiple worlds.

The Dual Sense controller’s haptic feedback is also put to good use. Not only do various effects create a more immersive experience, but squeezing the triggers fully allows for alternate fire modes and feedback will notify you of when enemies are ready to be taken down.

The video additionally gave a swift look at other features in the game: open level designs; Clank puzzles; Glitch combat; arena challenges; aerial combat; and self-contained pocket dimensions.

The game will feature the series’ first ever photo mode, with plenty of stickers and filters to use. If it’s anything like that in Insomniac’s Spider-Man, we’re in for a treat.

Lastly, the game follows in the footsteps of The Last of Us Part II with a robust set of accessibility options. More will be revealed later, but it looks to include display options, varying colours and assists.

Plus, did we mention how stunning it looks? See for yourself in the full video below.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is out exclusively on PlayStation 5 on 11 June. Pre-order now.
