Laverne Cox brought the glamour back to the Oscars with an enormous bright pink Christian Siriano gown made from over 1,000 yards of tulle.

After a year of virtual awards ceremonies Hollywood A-listers made a welcome return to the red carpet for the 93rd Academy Awards, and Laverne Cox set the bar insanely high.

The Orange Is the New Black star dressed to impress in a jaw-dropping gown inspired by “an inside-out fuschia orchid,” Christian Siriano told In Style.

“I think what’s important is that this dress has so many dimensions,” the designer added. “Parts are sheer, graphic, the cold colour is powerful but the dress is still soft and romantic.”

The incredible piece took over three weeks to make and used more than 900 metres of fabric; Cox first saw the gown at one of Siriano’s fashion shows and was instantly “obsessed”.

Siriano was only too happy to work alongside her to create the perfect red carpet look – and it fit like a dream.

“I think when I showed the dress to Laverne, we both had an instant reaction that it was the one and going to be perfect!” he said. “It’s right off our most recent runway and it really was a perfect gown for this joyful night celebrating talent.

“It also probably was one of the best fittings I have had for an award show. It fit almost perfectly at the very first fitting.”

Laverne Cox and Siriano agreed the vivid pink shade added a much-needed shot of colour for the celebration.

“Colour was so important for tonight,” the designer explained. “We need some joy in our lives and I think colour and movement held that for an awards show.”

To draw it all together, Cox said it was about “bringing all the research and glam references to my team and collaborating with their creativity and artistry to bring the look to life”.

“It’s about having inspiration and being flexible in the moment to create something in that moment that serves the overall vision,” she continued. “It’s about allowing the creative process with great artists.”

The result is an awe-inspiring look that screams trans beauty from head to toe.
