Lil Nas X’s father is speaking out in defence of his son after people blamed the rapper for his mother’s addiction.

Robert Stafford, Nas’ father and a renowned gospel musician, took to Instagram to defend his son after people accused the rapper of not helping his parents. He explained that Nas has done his part to help, but there isn’t “enough money that you can throw at this situation to make it right”.

“Despite what people say [Lil Nas X] is the greatest kid a parent can be BLESSED with,” Stafford wrote. “Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction she’s STILL a QUEEN and he goes through great lengths to make sure we’re taking care of.”

Stafford ended the post by asking people to keep Lil Nas X’s mother in their prayers, and he warned “those out there trying to create a false story” about his family won’t “prosper”.

The “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” rapper has faced backlash after a video allegedly of his mother begging for money was posted online, according to RadarOnline.

Instagram gossip page The Neighborhood Talk shared on Wednesday (14 April) another user’s video of a woman standing on the side of a roadway. The person recording the video said the woman was holding up a cardboard sign, which he claimed, read “feed me”. The man then repeatedly asked the woman if she is “Lil Nas’ mama”, but her response isn’t clearly audible.

In a 2020 interview with Variety, Lil Nas X shared that he was trying to get his mother into rehab, admitting he never really talked about their relationship.

“She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship,” Nas said. “Even trying to get her better – things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”

Lil Nas X addressed the issue in a now-deleted tweet, according to hotnewhiphop, saying people “don’t know how many nights I’ve cried myself to sleep feeling guilty because nothing i tried would help my mom”. The post ended: “Paint me as the bad guy all you want, but at the end of the day, you don’t know me outside of this internet s**t.”
