Schitt’s Creek and Sam Smith lead kaleidoscopic parade of queer talent honoured at GLAAD Awards

Schitt’s Creek and Sam Smith scooped up huge wins at the GLAAD Media Awards Thursday evening (8 April) because talent recognises talent.
For the 32nd annual GLAAD Awards, held virtually by the media watchdog, a slew of queer television shows, films and performers scored top honours.
Schitt’s Creek did what it does best – win awards – as it bagged Outstanding Comedy Series, while Smith was recognised in the Outstanding Music Artist Category.
Smith was handed the digital award by none other than Katy Perry. “Music has remained this constant force of unity throughout the world for people,” they said in their acceptance speech.
“So, I just wanted to raise a cup of tea — having a tea party — for everyone in this category. I really hope that we can all be together and I can go to a GLAAD Awards someday and meet everyone.”
“It is quite the honour to have won Outstanding Comedy Series at the #GLAAD awards for the second year running!” wrote Schitt’s Creek on its official Twitter.

Other winners included Netflix’s The Boys in the Band, a film that had an exclusively queer cast, and Disclosure, a documentary that saw trans creatives and thinkers explore on-screen representation.
Also winning big – Hulu’s Happiest Season (Outstanding Film), ABC’s First Day (Outstanding Kids and Family Programming), HBO’s I May Destroy You (Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series) and The Last of Us II (Outstanding Video Game).
Star Trek: Discovery and Veneno picked up awards for drama and Spanish-language television series respectively.
The ceremony, held on GLAAD’s YouTube channel before streaming on Hulu, was hosted by comedian Niecy Nash.
“The GLAAD Media Awards special guests and winners sent an undeniably loud message of LGBTQ acceptance around the world tonight,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis during the ceremony.
“This year’s award recipients, including Disclosure, Schitt’s Creek, Star Trek: Discovery and Veneno, remind us that even in times of political and cultural division, diverse LGBT+ representation and visibility can enlighten, entertain and create lasting impact, ultimately raising the bar for LGBT+ inclusion in media.”
In a touching moment, the Glee cast reunited to join Demi Lovato in paying a heartfelt tribute to their late co-star Naya Rivera, who tragically died last year.
