Crusader Kings 3 developer will fix same-sex marriage mods after ‘unintentionally’ breaking them

Crusader Kings 3

Paradox Interactive, the developer behind strategy game Crusader Kings 3, are releasing an update that will fix broken same-sex marriage mods.

Crusader Kings 3 is a historical medieval strategy game that sees you develop the dynasty of your royal house as you take over neighbouring kingdoms. The base version of the game allows for same-sex relationships but not same-sex marriage or concubinage. Players got around this by creating customised mods.

However, a patch to the game released in March broke these mods. According to a post on the Paradox forums, the 1.3 patch causes the following (slightly homophobic) error message:

“Error: make_concubine effect [ Illegal concubinage: <Character> is the same gender as their concubinist, so they can’t become a concubine ]”.

Now a new comment on the forum post explains the mods will soon be fixed: “same-sex concubines should be moddable in the game in an upcoming patch prior to 1.4, and we should have same-sex marriage moddable by 1.4 if everything goes as planned.”

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun in March when the mods broke, Paradox explained the change was “part of a set of fixes around concubine-related behaviours in the game, leading to buggy outcomes like concubines being assigned to dead people.

“In no way was this implemented in order to deliberately bar players from including same-sex relationships in the game.

“The CK3 team, and Paradox as a whole, are very conscious of representation in our games, and same-sex lovers have been included in CK3 since launch – but we know this is not the same thing as a formal relationship. This is something we support, since allowing everyone to tell their story is a big part of our values.”

What’s perhaps notable is that Paradox still isn’t formally including same-sex marriage in Crusader Kings 3 themselves, despite being “very conscious of representation in [their] games”. Instead that representation remains left for player created mods.

There’s no release date yet for the 1.4 patch, but at least you know it’s coming – so you will get your gay concubines back relatively soon.
