The Dissident tells the untold story of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and it is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The documentary unearths secrets about the murder of the Washington Post journalist, who was critical of his country Saudi Arabia and of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s policies.

The Dissident had a limited cinema release and was made available digitally in some countries earlier this year, but now UK viewers can stream it through Amazon Prime Video.

The controversial and hard-hitting documentary is directed by Bryan Fogel who previously won an Academy Award for his documentary Icarus in 2018, which exposed an international doping scandal.

Fogel was granted exclusive access to the Turkish government’s evidence, to Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz and to Khashoggi’s close friend and fellow Saudi insurgent, Omar Abdulaziz to make The Dissident.

The official synopsis reads: “On October 2, 2018, Khashoggi entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul and never came out. His fiancée and dissidents around the world are left to piece together clues to his brutal murder – and in their dogged quest for truth, they expose a global cover-up perpetrated by the very country he loved.”

The documentary has received positive reviews from critics, and this is what some of them have been saying:

New Zealand-based website Stuff says the film is, “a dispiriting and infuriating film to watch. And yet, it is also a compelling, engrossing and important document that simply needs to be seen.”

The List says in a four-star review: “Propulsive, tense and extremely thorough, The Dissident feels like a worthy fit for a man who lived his life on the edge and devoted his existence to keeping people accurately informed.”

While The Times say: “It is, in the defiant spirit of Khashoggi himself, utterly merciless in its critique of a brutal Saudi regime.”

The Dissident was recently nominated for Best Documentary at the BAFTA Awards and alongside its release on Prime Video it’s got many people talking about the film.
