Iconic Xbox game Star Wars: Republic Commando available on PS4, PS5 and Switch for the first time

Star Wars: Republic Commando

It’s a great time for Star Wars gamers as the remaster of Star Wars: Republic Commando, originally released on the first Xbox console, is out now.

Available for PlayStation consoles and Nintendo Switch, this release marks the first time the game has been made available outside of the Xbox family – it’s already on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

The game is a first-person Star Wars shooter set during the Clone Wars. That’s after Star Wars: Episode II, in case you were wondering.

It sees you behind the helmet – literally, with its various visual effects – of a clone trooper who leads the Delta Squad special ops team. Over the course of the story you’ll not only win major battles, but bond with your squad mates.

The game is proof that Star Wars isn’t all lightsabers, spaceship battles and force powers. While we’d all love those abilities, sometimes you just need to shoot robots with a blaster to get the job done.

Republic Commando received decent reviews when it released back in 2005, but the lack of typical Star Wars hallmarks perhaps made it feel a little too generic – especially with the popularity of Halo at the time.

The tactical options set the game apart, though, as you not only fight to survive yourself but order your squad mates through each skirmish. Unfortunately, developer Aspyr has brought the game back as a single-player only game. The original had a 16-player multiplayer option that’s still available on Xbox.

This remaster does give players a chance to give this cult classic another go. Controls have been modernised, the frame rate has been smoothed out, and textures have been given a cleaner look.

This isn’t the first modernised Star Wars game from Aspyr. Xbox action RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 was ported to mobile devices last year, while Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast have all been remastered for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is available now on PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Check out the game in action in the trailer below.
