Amazon Prime Video is premiering plenty of new content in April 2021, including LGBT+ stories.

Viewers will get the chance to stream a documentary about the world’s first inclusive rugby club the King’s Cross Steelers, a drama series which explores Leonardo da Vinci’s queerness, not to mention the award-winning film The Mauritanian starring the iconic Jodie Foster.

The streaming service is adding plenty of classic films to its library in the UK as well as brand new shows including a horror from Lena Waithe and a coming-of-age drama based in Berlin.

They’ll all be available to stream for free as part of a Prime Video subscription, which costs £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year and comes with a 30-day free trial.

Some highlights which could be your next binge-watch include Leonardo: a miniseries based on Renaissance painter da Vinci, starring Poldark’s Aidan Turner.

The eight-part series will depict the famous artist as queer, with the show’s producer Luca Bernabei saying it was “part of his life” and it’s “right to represent it”.

It is due to premiere from 16 April on the platform with the plot reading, “exploring the secrets and drama behind the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, his life, his work and his personal struggles – all set against the backdrop of Renaissance Italy.”

Another new series is Them from Lena Waithe which premieres on 9 April. It explores terror in America during the 1950s as a Black family move from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighbourhood.

This takes place during the period known as The Great Migration and their home becomes ground zero where malevolent, otherworldly forces taunt and threaten to destroy them.

Also heading to the streaming service on 9 April is series one of We Children from Bahnhof Zoo, a coming-of-age drama which looks like Skins meets Euphoria.

The series follows six teenagers who find each other in the clubs and underground parties of Berlin, all while searching for their place in the world, and dealing with a wild lifestyle and individual trauma.

Some other big releases joining the streaming platform this month include films that have been forced to skip cinema releases in the UK due to the pandemic.

Film fans in the UK can finally watch Sound of Metal from 12 April which has recently been nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor for lead Riz Ahmed’s role.

He plays a punk-metal drummer, Ruben who begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career, and in turn, his life is over.

The Jodie Foster-fronted drama The Mauritanian began streaming on the platform from 1 April, which sees the award-winning actress play lawyer Nancy Hollander who attempts to seek justice for Mohamedou Ould Slahi – a man accused of being “the head recruiter for 9/11”.

Another addition is the acclaimed comedy Palm Springs from 9 April, which stars Andy Samberg as the carefree Nyles who encounters a reluctant maid of honour at a wedding. Things soon get complicated when the pair find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.

They join recent critical hits like Dunkirk and American Hustle as well as comedy favourites including Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Blades of Glory, Ghostbusters and How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days on the platform.
