Terrified woman stalked around supermarket by teenage girls shouting homophobic abuse

A woman who was followed around a Co-op supermarket by teens shouting homophobic abuse was so scared that she “burst into tears”.

Lucy, 38, who did not want to give her last name, told the Liverpool Echo she was just “picking up a couple of bits for our tea” on Wednesday (24 March) when she was approached by two girls aged between 14 and 16.

She said: “There were two teenage girls in there looking at themselves in the two-way mirror by the store room.

“As soon as they spotted me they started saying – and excuse my language – ‘look at this f**king dirty lesbo.’

“They basically followed me around the Co-op shouting abuse at me.”

Staff at the Co-op supermarket in Hunt’s Cross, Liverpool, noticed what was happening and security guards asked the teens to leave.

The girls refused to leave the shop, but finally gave in when staff threatened to call the police. However, Lucy’s ordeal wasn’t over as they waited for her outside.

When she finished her shopping, continued yelling homophobic abuse at her until she reached her car.

“I got home and I was totally shell shocked,” said Lucy.

“I just burst into tears and I’m 38 years old, I’m not like a kid and bullying should be left well behind.

“Obviously I’m worried about going back again in case they’re there.

“Even though they were asked to leave they were still waiting outside for me… Things like this haven’t happened to me since the early 2000s.”

Lucy said she was concerned about what would have happened if the teens had screamed abuse at someone more vulnerable, adding: “People need to think before they speak.

“They could say something to somebody who is already on the edge and that could be the final point where somebody goes and takes their own life because of abuse like that.”

Merseyside Police said that an investigation into the incident is underway. The Co-op has been contacted for comment.
