Hades and Last of Us Part II dominate BAFTA Games Awards in incredible night for LGBT+ titles

Hades - BAFTA Game Awards

The BAFTA Games Awards’ biggest winner was PC and Nintendo Switch title Hades, winning five awards including Best Game and Best Narrative.

Nominated for eight BAFTA Games Awards, Hades has been widely celebrated for its unique take on roguelike gameplay and its diverse range of characters, including its bisexual lead character Zagreus.

It was a great night for LGBT+ games, with The Last Of Us Part II winning three awards out of the thirteen it was nominated for – a new record.

It won EE Game Of The Year, as voted for by the public, and Laura Bailey won Best Performer In A Leading Role for her portrayal of Abby.

Perhaps the biggest winner of all was PlayStation, with their exclusives winning eight BAFTA Games Awards in total. That included two awards for Sackboy: A Big Adventure, plus awards for Dreams and Ghost of Tsushima.

The BAFTAs were live streamed and presented by games journalist and presenter Elle Osili-Wood, who ahead of the ceremony praised the awards for their diversity in an interview with PinkNews.

The night included an ode to gaming in 2020, how games have brought people together during the pandemic, and praise for the resilience of developers.

Looking to the future, Osili-Wood called for the industry to build on the inclusivity garnered from new audiences joining the gaming community this year.

Elsewhere, Media Molecule studio director Siobhan Reddy won the BAFTA Fellowship award for her inspiring leadership and commitment to inclusivity. The studio is best known for Dreams and LittleBigPlanet.

Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons also won two awards, including Best Multiplayer game – presented by none other than Drag Race legend and gamer Trixie Mattel – and the Game Beyond Entertainment award that celebrates the social and cultural impact of gaming.
