Rihanna has whipped song-starved fans into a frenzy by hinting she might drop new music, more five years after her last album was released.

It’s been a long, long, long five years for Rihanna fans, who’ve been eagerly awaiting a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Anti pretty much since it was released back in 2016.

Finally, it looks their patience may soon pay off, after the icon said she might release “just one song… soon”.

The music icon shared a video on Instagram to celebrate Anti spending five full years on the Billboard 200 – making her the first Black female artist to reach the milestone in the chart’s history. She wrote in the caption that she was “grateful to the most High for putting die hard supporters in my circle”.

One cheeky fan suggested that Rihanna should “celebrate” her accomplishment “by releasing a song”.

Rihanna replied by saying “I think I should” alongside a “soon” emoji. She added: “Just 1 tho lol”.

Naturally, fans reacted with joy at the news. One person wrote on Twitter by declaring: “RIHANNA JUST CONFIRMED THAT SHE IS COMING!!!”

Another fan wrote on Twitter “RIHANNA IS COMING” repeatedly alongside a video of the Barbados-born musician dancing.

Rihanna has previously suggested that her next studio album, dubbed R9 by fans, is actually finished. In December 2019, she posted a short video on Instagram with the caption: “Update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it.”

The video didn’t feature any new music from Rihanna or a possible release date for the album.

While she hasn’t been releasing new music, Rihanna has been focusing on other business ventures over the past few years, including her cosmetic brand Fenty Beauty and her lingerie line Savage x Fenty.

But it’s not like fans haven’t heard her in anything lately. Last year, she performed alongside Canadian R&B singer PARTYNEXTDOOR in the song “Believe it”.
